Beaverhead National Forest Hunting Area At
Willow Outfitters we hunt mainly in the
Beaverhead and
Gallatin National Forests, and more
specifically, one of our favorite spots to hunt for
big game is the
Lee Metcalfe
Wilderness area. The Beaverhead National Forest
is part of a greater area commonly known as the
Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest which is the
largest national forest in Montana, covering 3.32
million acres in Southwest Montana near the Idaho
border.
The Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest can be
separated into 9 distinct areas and covers 8
counties. In 1908 President Roosevelt named the two
forests and in 1996 the two merged and became one.
Several mountain ranges are located within this
area, and one in particular, the Madison Range
located in Madison County is where the Lee Metcalf
Wilderness area is located and one of the more
popular areas to hunt for Montana elk and large
game. This region of Montana is also known as the
Greater Yellowstone wilderness area and much of the
wildlife and scenery found in Yellowstone is also
